·        May 31             King Kelley Vintage Baseball Fundraiser 1 - 7 PM
·         Kick off our Vintage Baseball Season at 507 Main Street, the home of Baseball Hall of Famer “King” Kelly.

Who was King Kelly? At the height of his career in the 1880s, hitter and base stealer extraordinaire Mike “King” Kelly was hired by the Boston Bean Eaters for the unheard of sum of $10,000. In a demonstration of sincere baseball enthusiasm (some might say folly), the town of Hingham then presented Kelly with a home on Main Street, followed later that year by a carriage and two horses. To the bitter disappointment of Boston and Hingham fans, Kelly only stayed for a year before he left town to join the Cincinnati Reds. Even so, it was long enough for Kelly to make a colorful impression. He was known to promenade through town with a Japanese valet and a little pet monkey on his shoulder.

Historical Society members, and current owners of the “King” Kelly House, Moira and Cameron Congdon, will host this grand event. Enjoy live music, beer, barbecue, and a chance to meet sports writer and King Kelly biographer, Marty Appel, who will be on hand to sign copies of his book Slide, Kelly, Slide. Other attractions include raffles of sought-after prizes, including, Red Sox tickets, fresh lobsters, baseball artwork, hand-made bats and more.  You may even catch a glimpse of King Kelly himself. Tickets are $35 each, $40 the day of the event. Check our website for sale locations.

Over 350 students, teachers and chaperones learn about life in early Hingham.

·        June 10             Old Ordinary opens for summer
·         The Old Ordinary opens for the summer. If the last time you visited the Old Ordinary was in 5th grade, it’s time to come back. This distinguished old tavern on the Boston-Plymouth stage line was home to among other things, a privateer captain, a wigmaker, a chairmaker, and an architect. It’s filled with rare and unique treasures that recapture Hingham’s history as a fishing village, a shipping port, an early industrial center, and a farming community. Tours run from 1-4 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

·        June 8                Annual Tour of Historic Homes
·         The 84th (84th!) Annual Tour of Historic Homes. This year’s pilgrimage features several beautiful houses that have been creatively and thoughtfully updated to accommodate modern lifestyles. You can purchase tickets at the main office at 30 North Street and many other locations around Hingham. Check our website (www.hinghamhistorical.org) for details. Visit us at Old Derby, on tour day where you can pause for refreshments. The Old Ordinary the Out of the Ordinary Gift Shop will be open as well. There you can buy jewelry, mugs, maps and many other unique Hingham-related items that make great gifts for far away friends and relatives.

·        July 5             Vintage Baseball Game

We’re always on the lookout for old photos and memorabilia to feature in the program, so if you have old Hingham baseball souvenirs you’d like to show us, e-mail Suzanne Buchanan at director@hinghamhistorical.org.
