HISTORIC
HOUSE MARKERS
---Be a part of Hingham history---
Thank you for requesting information about the purchase of an Historic House
Marker. The markers indicate your home’s estimated construction date and the
name of the original occupant. Your marker will be 12” X 14”, made of MDO
exterior grade plywood and capped with a molding on the gable. The sign is
painted white with grey trim, and the black lettering is done by hand in “Goudy Olde
Style,” a typeface designed by the late William A. Dwiggins of Hingham. Dwiggins
was one of America’s premier graphic designers in the early 20th
century. The markers, and the information on them, must be as approved by the
Historical Commission and may not be altered.
To find its “historical” date and other information about your home, you can
look it up in Hingham’s “Comprehensive Community Survey,” issued in 1991 and
since revised and updated. Consult the Survey at Town Hall, 210 Central Street,
in the offices of the Historical Commission, the Board of Assessors, the
Planning Board, or the Town Clerk, and at the Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt
Street.
If you want help in researching the history of your home, call the Historical
Commission at 781-741-1492, and make an appointment to review material at their
office. Additional information can be obtained at the reference desk at the
Hingham Public Library, or at the Plymouth County Registry of Deeds, 50 Obery
Street, Plymouth.
Markers cost to the general public
$100
Members of the Historical Society receive a 10% discount off their markers.
